Resident and Student Education

Our Commitment to Medical Education

In the Georgetown University tradition of ‘living in service to others’, we are trying to educate young health professionals about the disparities in health care for underserved children and to foster their understanding and interest in the critical role of the provider in making a difference in the lives of medically vulnerable children.

Students
Medical, social work, health care administration, and nursing students can spend time with our staff as part of our team. Fourth year medical students, as part of an elective, can work directly on the KIDS Mobile Medical Clinic and with other community based providers as a team member evaluating and treating patient illnesses, performing well child examinations and learning about the importance of a team approach to complex issues related to poverty and poor access to quality medical care. Nursing students, as part of a final year elective can work directly on the mobile clinic with our nurse manager to learn about health care delivery and nursing in a community based primary care setting. Social Work students can work directly with our Child Advocacy / Mental Health Coordinator to assist in providing complex social services. The health care administration internship is a twelve- week program covering administrative operations, managed care, and community outreach activities in a non-profit setting. The intern works closely with the Program Administrator on a project of interest to the intern and important to the program and enables the intern to develop and apply material that have been learned over the course of the program.

Residents
The community component of the residency program is very exciting and is an integral part of the residency program. Pediatric residents, as part of their training, spend a month rotation with the mobile clinic program during their intern year. All residents, in their second and third years will be offered an opportunity to be part of a ‘ community –track’ and have part of their continuity clinic experience based at a community site. Many residents who selected this option will have their continuity clinics on the Mobile Clinic. In the third year, all residents participate in a one month ‘advocacy’ rotation, in which they work on a project related to children with a Washington-based children’s organization of their choice (local, regional, or national).
